This application has a connection to another request named "hillhacks – Hacking and Making in the Himalaya" which will be happening Dharamshala/India in October. Both are modules or functions of the same thing. This one focuses more on the concrete idea of a Web25 birthday(crypto)party with short "lightning talks". The idea is based on the concept of disco-tech (https://webwewant.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/WWW_Grants2014_EvaluationReport_TacticalTech.pdf), a method tactical tech just tried via a rapid response from the Web We Want in 2013. Those lighning talks will focus on the the whole idea of an free, open, diverse and universal web, based on a neutral and decentralized network, as well as on brief introductions on how to implement more diversity and crypto in ones daily online activities. As known from cryptoparties the people go home and spread their new knowledge within their peergroup, too. So we will have a birthday party of hillhacks(0) and of the Web(25) in various Indian cities and in the countries around. If we receive grants we will conduct such a party in at least 5 cities across India and neighbouring countries in August 2014. In each city we will have a partner organization to reach the local population easier besides the usual online-channels, as well as better access to suitable venues and other support on site.
...
# expected reach: how many people will this touch directly and indirectly, size of each party
how many + who will be attracted (and how to attract them? Movie lovers, too?) if only lightning talks it might be possible?
How will your project contribute to the global web we want movement? (Please provide no more than 500 words.)
Those "hillhacks(0)+Web(25)" birthday(crypto)parties will be about the Web We Want and about alternatives in the web and the internet as well as the concepts and the daily use of more cryptography online. It is planned to collect the Web We Want opinions before and after the event locally and online, to see if the ideas, wishes and believes has changed and how. The key lighning talks will get recorded and published via the hillhacks.in website, too, so others are invited to make the same experiment with themselves and pass it on to us and/or the Web We Want website resp. Mozilla's interactive quilt. Besides we will address the need of the full universal access to the internet for the whole population, showing what is the current state in India followed by a discussion what needs to be done to move forward. Also it is aimed to motivate the participants to work up to two weeks on one particular topic and issue in this field during the time of hillhacks workshops and/or at the conference itself. In sum the events will raise awareness and hopefully action on the issues of the Web We Want and gives more knowledge about the existing alternatives and how to protect oneself and others online.
